La bOhéme

Set against the backdrop of Paris, a group of bohemian artists find solace and comradery in their shared dreams. In their frosty attic, a chance encounter ignites a romance between the seamstress Mimì and the poet Rodolfo. Their love flourishes in winter’s chill…yet as winter gives way to spring, the realities of the world begin to cast a shadow over their idyllic affair. In the face of adversity, Mimì and Rodolfo must confront the painful truth that like the seasons, some love affairs must come to an end.

Premiering in 1918, Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica) is the second in a trio of one-act operas known as Il Trittico (The Triptych), and Puccini’s favorite. Written after Puccini made many visits to his sister in a convent, the work is a tragic and intimate window into a woman’s pursuit of redemption. According to the legendary composer, “I always wanted to make people cry, that’s all.”

Trouble in Tahiti, Bernstein’s satire of 1950s American suburban life, examines a disconsolate couple trying to attain the married bliss society—in its conformity and consumerism—promised them. He employs a jazzy Greek chorus trio to keep the critique moving along.

The most brilliant of Austrian operettas takes us to the outskirts of romantic Old Vienna. It’s New Year Eve and we are in the company of Rosalinde, who is determined to teach her philandering husband Eisenstein a lesson, even while she is being pursued by her former beau, the operatic tenor Alfred. At the centre of the action is the extremely wealthy, eternally bored Prince Orlofsky, whose lavish masked ball brings everything to a most delicious boil. But what if the whole plot has been a cunning plan masterminded by someone just to get back at Eisenstein?

Based on Henry James’ haunting novella, this enigmatic story examines one of Britten’s favorite themes: loss of innocence. Britten’s third chamber opera is written with a concise musical structure matching James’ precise writing style, even as the piece sparks a network of ambiguous connections and queries but refuses to tie up all loose ends.
